About the Society

The Loup & District Historical Society was founded in February 2019 with the aims of researching and recording the history of The Loup and the surrounding area. By November 2019 it had published its first 360-page book called ‘Around The Loup’. The society organises a series of talks on historical topics over the winter months.

During the Covid pandemic our founding chairman Sean Corey discovered a Crannog near his home in Maghadone townland which generated substantial interest and resulted in a survey by QUB staff in March 2024.

During 2022/3/4 the society took an active interest in the former Magherafelt workhouse site (now Mid Ulster Hospital) and they embarked upon a project to erect signage and create an associated website holding information about the former workhouse.
